Beach Rats from Eliza Hittman opened in theaters in Los Angeles and New York over the weekend, earning a solid $15,484 per screen average.
Eliza’s film, which stars Harris Dickinson who plays an aimless teenager on the outer edges of Brooklyn who struggles to escape his bleak home life and navigate questions of self-identity, won her the Directing Award at Sundance this year. Beach Rats was also awarded the Grand Jury Prize at LA Outfest, among numerous nominations this year.
While the film only played on 3 screens, the box office demonstrates momentum, particularly with traditional art house audiences as well as support from the gay community.
