Ilian Metev Scores a Golden Leopard at 70th Locarno Film Fest

Bulgarian filmmaker Ilian Metev has been awarded the Golden Leopard – Filmmaker of the Present prize at the 70th Locarno International Film Festival.

Ilian won the coveted accolade for his narrative directorial debut 3/4, about a gifted pianist and her eccentric family.

The young director told Film New Europe “I wanted to focus on everyday moments with their delicate complexities and to avoid almost everything extreme. I am interested in an audiovisual style, which serves the overall film and in a way that becomes invisible.”

Ilian won the France 4 Visionary Award at Cannes Film Festival in 2012 for the documentary Sofia’s Last Ambulance as well as significant awards at Zurich, Krakow and Karlovy Vary film festivals.

Born in Sofia, Illian studied at Central Saint Martins and the UK National Film and Television School in London.
