Cannes Buzz Surrounds Chloé Zhao’s Second Feature ‘The Rider’

Off the back of favorable Cannes’ buzz, Chinese filmmaker Chloé Zhao’s Directors Fortnight feature The Rider has been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics.

Chloe’s second film after 2015’s Songs My Brother Taught Me tells the story of young rodeo star forced to give up his career after a serious injury. The director used mostly non professional actors, resulting in a story that blends narrative and documentary styles.

Song’s My Brother Taught Me, which also screening as part of Cannes Directors Fortnight, scored major awards at the Jerusalem and Mumbai Film Festivals as well as earning a Women Filmmaker’s grant at the IFP Gotham Awards.
