Filmmakers João Pedro Rodrigues and Carla Simón have each been awarded a Golden Tulip at the 36th Istanbul Film Festival over the weekend.
Rodrigues, who is from Portugal, was awarded the International Golden Tulip Award for his latest feature The Ornithologist. The film, about a lonely ornithologist who is rescued from drowning by a couple of Chinese pilgrims, where he ‘plunges into an eerie and dark forest’ and has to escape, has earned 10 wins and 16 awards during its festival run including a Best Director prize at the Locarno Film Festival.
The International Golden Tulip Competition Special Jury Prize went to emerging Spanish filmmaker Carla Simón for Summer 1993. Her debut feature scored two awards at Berlinale 2017 – The Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury for the Best Film and GWFF Best First Feature Award.
