#screensparks: alankrita shrivastava’s ‘lipstick under my burkha’ wins at glasgow film festival

Indian director Alankrita Shrivastava’s Lipstick Under My Burkha has won the Audience Award at the 2017 Glasgow Film Festival. The film is Alankrita’s second feature and tells the story of four conservative women who search for a little freedom in a small Indian town.

Her award was presented by actor David Tennant before the festival’s closing gala. The film has courted controversy recently after a decision by India’s Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to refuse a theatrical release, stating that the film had ‘lady-orientated’ subject matter and ‘sexual scenes and abusive words’.
